RCU Formulates Strategic Plan

The Reformed Church University recently set itself on track for institutional growth and the provision of quality education with the formulation and adoption of the University’s strategic plan at a special workshop which was held at Flamboyant Hotel in Masvingo.

The Strategic Plan which shall be implemented from 2015 to 2019 is centred around ten key strategic priority areas namely; academic growth, infrastructural development, resource mobilisation, technology equipment support services, stakeholder satisfaction, human capital development, research and development, business development, corporate governance and community engagement.

These ten strategic priority areas set the University on its desired path for strategic growth and sustainability, anchored on goals, objectives and the strategies that will be adopted to achieve them. The Strategic Plan is further enhanced by the strategic results-based monitoring and evaluation framework, underpinned by resource mobilisation and business development activities to ensure the successful implementation of the set goals and objectives.

Commenting on this development, RCU Council Chairman, Dr. Augustine Mazvuru said, “the Reformed Church University is at a crucial stage of growth and development underpinned by a conscious effort to align all its operations to the niche as well as enhancing its capacity to deliver on its core mandate of teaching and learning, research and community service embedded in Christian values.”

The Council Chairman added that, “the intensity of competition amongst Zimbabwe’s universities is very high and the Universityneededto put itsexpertise and concepts together to make the Reformed Church University a competitive academic brand in Zimbabwe and beyond.”

Commenting on the strategic planning process which resulted in the guiding document, the Reformed Church University Vice Chancellor, Professor Wiseman Magwa noted that, “through an environmental scan, the current situation and performance of the University were reviewed and analysed. A synthesis of the current baseline of university pillars and structures produced a gap analysis as a basis for the long-term Strategic Plan.

“Based on these processes, the University developed a regimented long-term approach to expanding the scope and impact of its work culminating in the production of this strategic plan.”

The Vice Chancellor further noted that, this plan is coming at a time where regulators are working to ensure that all higher education institutions begin to actively and effectively implement their mandates in line with the nation's development needs and in conformity with the Government economic blue print, the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (Zim-Asset).

Professor Magwa said all universities both public and private have been given specific mandates which should be adhered to religiously, and with reference to this Strategic Plan, the mandate of a University simply put, is its vision.

To this end he noted that, the RCU’s vision of being “a relevant world class centre of excellence in special needs education, research and community service embedded in Christian values,” becomes an important guiding principle to its niche as an academic institution.

The success of the formulation of the RCU strategic plan marks yet another milestone in the University’s quest for academic growth as it consolidates its position as an institution that values quality education rather than masses of students as far as education is concerned. In the same vein, the University shall continuously develop a host of social, economic and technological innovations with the view of improving society.
