RIO-SET 2016: RCU Powers to 3rd Position

The Reformed Church University (RCU) shrugged off competition from twelve Zimbabwean universities to emerge the third best university in research and innovation in an outstanding exhibition display at the recently ended Research and Intellectual Outputs Science, Engineering and Technology Expo (RIO-SET) 2016 edition which was at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo.

NUST and the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) earned the first and second positions respectively.

The RIO-SET, which aims to unpack knowledge excellence, is an annual event initiated by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development. It is an initiative to showcase to the nation and the Southern African region, the research outputs and intellectual prowess by Zimbabweans.

Furthermore, RIO-SET is intended to provide an ideal platform from which Zimbabwe can harness and channel the knowledge and wisdom developed by the nation’s institutions of higher learning, research and related institutions and Zimbabweans in the diaspora, towards the achievement of the country’s goals.

The 2016 edition of the RIO-SET ran from the 31st of August to the 3rd of September 2016 under the theme “Growing the Zimbabwean Economy Through Innovations”.

The adjudication process which earned RCU a 3rd place involved, among others, evidence of scientific thought, originality and creativity, thoroughness, visual display, oral presentation appearance of stand, demeanour and attitude of personnel manning the stand. Other variables taken into consideration included knowledge and literature on the exhibition, content of the exhibit, innovation, relevance to the theme and to the vision and mission statement of the institution.

The RCU’s recognition at RIO-SET consolidates the University’s key strategic area of Research and Development as outlined in the RCU Strategic Plan 2015-2019.

Commenting on this significant accomplishment, RCU Acting Vice Chancellor Mr. Rodgers Sonny Chisi noted that, ‘being 3rd at an national research and innovation exhibition such as RIO-SET is testimony that the RCU is on the right path with regards to growth and the provision of quality Higher Education at both local and regional levels.'

On receiving the good news of the success story, the Acting Vice Chancellor commented; “We are committed to our mandate and we cherish the unwavering support that we receive from our Ministry and from the person of the Minister, Professor Jonathan Moyo.”

Mr. Chisi hailed the various research projects and innovations being undertaken by the University, highlighting that the RCU shall distinguish itself as an academic institution of repute through investing and increasing its outputs in research and development for regional and national advancement.

The programmes offered at RCU are tailored to meet the students’ academic and professional needs and are relevant to the society and economy at both local and regional levels.
