SEMINAR THEME

SOCIOLOGY OF EXPERIENCE AND WAYS OF KNOWING

SUB THEMES

  • SOCIOLOGY OF EXPERIENCE
  • WAYS OF KNOWING
  • TRANSFORMATION OF RESEARCH DISCOURSE
  • TELLING A STORY OTHERWISE NEVER TOLD AS ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

RESEARCH CONTEXT

  • THE RESEARCH WAS DONE IN INDIA – NEW DELHI WHERE THE RESEARCHERS HAD GONE AS MEDICAL TOURISTS AND LATER TURNED COVID 19 LOCKDOWN VICTIMS FROM THE BEGINNING OF MARCH 2020 TO MID MAY 2020
  • RESEARCH WAS DONE FROM A HOTEL WHERE THE RESEARCHERS WERE LODGED DURING THE PERIOD OF THEIR LOCKDOWN IN NEW DELHI

RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS

  • AS A RESULT OF THE STRICT COVID 19 REGULATIONS CONCERNING HUMAN INTERACTIONS, THE RESEARCHERS HAD LIMITED ACCESS TO RESPONDENTS AND THE NARRATIVES TOLD IN THIS RESEARCH ARE BASED ON ONE MAIN RESPONDENT AND TWO OTHER RESPONDENT WHO WERE ALL WORKERS AT THE HOTEL.
  • OBSERVATIONS WERE DONE FROM THE HOTEL BALCONY.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

  • THE RESEARCHERS HAD LIMITED OPTIONS ON SELECTION OF RESEARCH APPROACHES BECAUSE OF THE COVID 19 RESTRICTION. THEY SETTLED FOR THE NARRATIVE RESEARCH OF THE STORY TYPE WHERE THE RESEARCHERS PROVIDED A VOICE FOR THE CIRCUMSTANCES
  • THIS WAS AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH WHICH IS SELDOM USED IN EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH BUT WHICH SUITED VERY MUCH THE CIRCUMSTANCES THE RESEARCHERS FOUND THEMSELVES IN.
  • DATA COLLECTION WAS DONE USING ‘SOFT’ INTERVIEWS AND OBSERVATIONS WHICH WERE THE ONLY OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO THE RESEARCHERS IN THE CIRCUMSTANCES.
  • THESE STRATEGIES MADE THE STUDY FEASIBLE IN THE CONTEXT OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC AND ASSOCIATED RESTRICTIONS.
  • THUS THE EMERGENCE OF THE ALTERNATIVE ‘WAYS OF KNOWING’ IN NOT SO FAMILIAR RESEARCH CONTEXTS WHICH REQUIRE A TRANSFORMATION OF THE RESEARCH DISCOURSES.

THIS RESEARCH SEMINAR WAS EXTREMELY INSPIRING AS IT OFFERED NEW INSIGHTS ON ALTERNATIVE WAYS OF DOING RESEARCH EVEN UNDER RESTRICTED CIRCUMSTANCES (UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES AND UNUSUAL DATA SOURCES). THE REFORMED CHURCH UNIVERSITY IS PROUD TO HAVE HOSTED SUCH AN INSPIRATIONAL SEMINAR TO ITS STAFF AND ALSO STAFF FROM OTHER INSTITUTIONS.

WATCH THIS SPACE AS THE RCU CONTINUES TO HOST SUCH ACADEMICALLY STIMULATING RESEARCH SEMINARS!!!!!
