The Faculty of Arts, Theology, Culture and Heritage Studies is currently in the process of growth and development. It houses three programmes: Bachelor of Theology Honours Degree, Bachelor of Arts Honours in Media and Digital Communication Studies and Bachelor of Development Studies Honours Degree. The Faculty focuses on the development of academics and professionals equipped to examine, analyse, critique, evaluate and apply concepts to contemporary situations in an inclusive environment fostering heritage-based, socio-political ad economic developmental issues. The Faculty aims at stimulating an on-going interaction between society, students and graduates leading the sensitisation of parties to the on-going  need for innovation and industrialisation based on specific heritages of given contexts.

Department of Theology, Media and Digital Communication Studies, and Development Studies

Welcome to the Department of Theology, Media and Digital Communication Studies, and Development Studies. The department has three (3) programmes which are: Bachelor of Theology Honours Degree, bachelors of honours in Media and Digital Communication Studies, and Bachelor of Honours in development Studies.

By the end of the programme, a graduate will be able to:

  1. To produce a well formed leader in theological and religious thought and practice,
  2. To provide leadership for theological education through consultancy and support services to communities in need of collaboration with other theological institutions,
  3. To facilitate research and publication in Africa theology and methodology,
  4. To stimulate collaboration among existing theological institutions,
  5. To prepare the student for a wide range of post graduate courses that meet the needs of the community, nation and the region.
  6. To initiate theological and religious initiatives that addresses the many challenges of the world such as poverty, corruption, HIV/AIDS, youth formation, famine and environmental change, and a concertized community.

BACHELOR OF ARTS HONOURS DEGREE IN THEOLOGY DURATION:

  • Four (4) years full time programme.
  • Four (4) years block release programme.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

In‐Service Block Release Programme: candidates must possess a recognised Diploma in Theology plus one year experience as a Minister of Religion.

Conventional Programme: A‐level certificate with passes in Divinity and any of the following subjects: English, Shona / Ndebele, Sociology or any other qualifications acquired by a candidate that may be approved by the Senate.

Department of Media and Digital Communication Studies

Welcome to the Department of Media and Digital Communication Studies. The program Media and Digital Communication offers students an overview of media and communication and how media technologies affect societies and development. Tracing the evolution of the media from the tools of mass communication to key players in the new information society, this program will equip students with key communication concepts with which they can successfully, critically evaluate media’s ability to create political, economic and social change. An analysis of fundamental communication theories that relate to media ownership and control, media and democracy, media and identify as well as media and governance will be done. Students will apply these theories to understand new media, including ownership and control and how these impact on the socio-economic development of communities. Emphasis will be on how media affects and manipulates people through the understanding of the relationship between media and culture.

Students who successfully complete this program should be able to:

  1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of theories of communication and the media and how these impact on the production distribution and reception of media products in concrete communities, national and international contexts with respect to basic appropriate research methodologies
  2. Identify appropriate social, cultural, political and economic theories that take cognisance of the concepts of democracy, development and social change and the role of the new information technologies in enabling the creation of democratic and equitable societies.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of communication and media systems which may cause significant political, economic and social change through an examination of current events.
  4. Understand communication and media skills within existing media organisations and judge and assess the impact of their theoretical and research skills in varied environments
  5. Conduct informed research guided by clearly articulated communication, Media and Digital Communication that promote community and national development.
  6. Take cognisance of and respect peoples cultures and basic human rights in the context of media and digital communication

Career prospects

Graduates in the programme of Media and Digital Communication have varied career opportunities which include the following print and broadcasting media organisations, social research organisations, advertising agencies, non-governmental organisations, public relations/customer care departments in both private and public organisation, digital publishing organisation, media consultancy and opening up own media-related enterprises.

Duration of the Programme

The duration of the programme is a minimum of four (4) academic years fulltime conventional programme and three (3) years block release up to a minimum of eight (8) years.

Entry requirements

To be admitted to the programme, a candidate must normally have:

  1. At least five (5) O-level passes at Grade C or better or their equivalent including English language. In addition, a candidate must have at least two (2) A-Level passes or
  2. Attained a satisfactory standard of performance on any entrance test which the University may device for the purposes of entry.
  3. Other qualifications acquired by a candidate that may be approved by the Senate.

Mature entry

  1. Candidates can be accepted for mature entry if they have five (5) O-Levels including English language and mathematics and have worked for a media organisation for more than three years. The said candidates should be twenty-three (23) years of age or over.

Special entry

  1. Candidates can be accepted for special entry if they holders of other qualifications that may be admitted by the Senate, subject to the availability of places.
  2. Candidates with Recognised Prior Learning (RLP) will be considered for admission on a case to case basis.

Exemption qualifications

  1. Candidates who have been doing media and development work at a recognized institution and have acquired appropriate qualification to the satisfaction of the Department of Media and digital communication studies can be exempted in such other courses deemed appropriate.

 

Department of Development Studies

Welcome to the Department of Development Studies. The programme is a response to an increasing demand for relevant expertise by institutions involved in developmental programmes. The programme blends theory and practice, emphasising also on the latter thus producing a marketable product. It also produces a graduate who appreciates the importance of Development Studies as a critical area to sustainable growth of both the developed and developing nations.

Students who successfully complete this program should be able to:

  1. To enhance entrepreneurial skills and the concept of self-reliance among students.
  2. To prepare students for career opportunities in development research and planning.
  3. To advance skills for those currently employed in development and other relevant fields.
  4. To produce practitioners with adequate technical and theoretical skills to enhance sustainable development
