Checkmate in Masvingo: RCU participates in the Dragon Open 2026
The Dragons Open Chess Tournament 2026 drew a diverse field to Masvingo this month, showcasing rising talent from universities, schools and the broader community in a tightly contested seven-round Swiss event.
Players from institutions including Reformed Church University (RCU) and Great Zimbabwe University (GZU), as well as schools such as Kyle College, Victoria High School, Hebron High School and Temeraire High School, took part in the competition that organisers said underlined the growing popularity of chess in the province.
The event was staged under the auspices of ZCF Masvingo Province with Provincial Chairperson Mr Ndanga acting as Tournament Director. Games were officiated by Chief Arbiter Mr Feya of RCU, assisted by Deputy Chief Arbiter Mr Ngatiane of GZU and a team of arbiters responsible for pairings, results and tournament procedures.
RCU fielded three entrants in the open section ,staff member Pride Mavesere and students Irene Gatsi and Panosara Kudzai. Tournament organisers noted the university representatives personally funded their participation and registration, a demonstration of personal commitment in the face of limited institutional financial support.
After seven rounds of competitive play, local favourite Tawanda Moyo emerged as champion, producing a steady series of results to top the standings. He was followed on equal points by Beitbridge’s William Mawulani and Kudzai Zezai; Mawulani was awarded second place after the application of the event’s tie‑break system, with Zezai taking third.
Special category prizes recognised standout performances across demographics. Takunda Zivanomoyo collected the Best Lady award, while additional honours were presented to the Best Secondary School Player and the Best Primary School Player, celebrating promising young competitors.
Organisers expressed gratitude to sponsors whose contributions underpinned the tournament. Mr Jerry Moyana’s KwaJerry Kunyama provided financial sponsorship that bolstered the prize fund and ensured meals for participants. Regency Chevron Hotel sponsored the venue and catered for the event, creating a comfortable environment for players and officials.
Organisers said the successful staging of the Dragons Open underscored the depth of chess talent in Masvingo Province and neighbouring areas and highlighted the importance of continued support from arbiters, institutions and sponsors in developing the next generation of players in Zimbabwe.
